Chapter 1 - The Midnight PoundingThe pounding on my front door began at 12:07 a.m.

Not knocking. Pounding.
Three violent blows that shook the framed photographs in my hallway.
My daughter, Emily, froze on my couch. An hour earlier, she had appeared barefoot on my porch, nine months pregnant, her designer dress torn at the shoulder and dark bruises climbing across her arms. I had barely caught her before her knees gave out.
“He said the police work for him, Mom,” she whispered.
Then her husband texted me.
SEND HER BACK OR I’LL MAKE SURE YOU BOTH LOSE EVERYTHING.
Derek Vale had money, connections, and enough friends inside the county government to make most people afraid of him. Most people.
I wiped the blood from Emily’s lip, covered her with a blanket, and poured myself two fingers of scotch. Derek had spent four years making sure my daughter believed nobody could touch him. He never understood exactly what I did in Washington.
Emily knew I was a federal judge. She didn’t know that six hours earlier, I had signed a sealed authorization connected to a federal organized-crime investigation—an authorization allowing agents to intercept communications between Derek and several men prosecutors believed were laundering millions through construction companies, private clubs, and local political campaigns.
Then someone slammed a fist against my door again.
“Mrs. Bennett!” a man shouted. “Sheriff’s Department! Open the door!”
Emily grabbed my wrist. Her face went white. “Mom… that’s the deputy Derek pays.”
I looked through the security monitor. Deputy Mark Collins stood outside. And beside him was my son-in-law. Derek smiled directly into the camera.
Then my phone rang. It was Special Agent Vance leading the wiretap operation.
“Judge Bennett,” Vance’s voice cut through the line, sharp and precise. “Derek Vale just dialed Deputy Collins from his car five minutes ago. We recorded the entire conversation. He offered Collins twenty thousand dollars in cash to extract your daughter from your house.”

“I have both of them on my porch right now, Agent Vance,” I said, my voice smooth and calm as glass.
“Hold tight, Judge. Tactical units are three minutes away.”
