Chapter 17 - The Ring Under the StarsOn a clear, starlit evening in November, we took Mia on a family camping trip down by the private creek at the back of our property.
After Mia fell asleep inside the warm canvas tent, Sarah and I sat by the crackling campfire, watching the orange embers drift upward into the night sky.
I reached into my jacket pocket and pulled out a small black velvet box.
Sarah turned, her breath catching as I popped open the lid to reveal a brilliant diamond ring flanked by twin sapphires.
"Sarah," I said, my voice thick with emotion as I dropped gently onto one knee on the soft grass. "You brought breath back into this house. You loved my daughter as your own, and you healed my soul. Will you marry us? Will you be our forever?"
Tears of pure joy spilled over Sarah's eyelashes, and a radiant smile lit up her face.
"Yes, David!" she whispered, throwing her arms around my neck as I slipped the ring onto her finger. "Yes, a million times yes!"
From inside the tent, a sleepy little voice called out: "Does this mean Sarah is officially our mom now?!"

Sarah and I burst out laughing as Mia poked her head out of the tent flap with a massive grin.
"Yes, sweetie," I called back, pulling Sarah into a deep, passionate kiss beneath the stars. "She's officially our mom."
