Chapter 18 - The Final Attempt to Take the Company|

The investment group claimed it had purchased a series of loans secured against Sterling Hospitality Group's future revenue.

The documents suggested that the company had borrowed money to fund renovations and expansion. If the loans were valid, the lender could demand immediate repayment after a breach of contract.

The timing was suspicious.

Victoria had never seen the agreements.

The company's general counsel examined them and found several inconsistencies. Some loan numbers did not match the accounting system. Others referred to properties that had never received the supposed funds.

The board agreed to challenge the claims.

But the uncertainty created an immediate problem.

Several suppliers placed deliveries on hold. A lender requested additional guarantees. Rumors spread that the company was facing financial collapse.

Victoria refused to make promises she could not support.

She held a meeting with department heads and explained what was known.

"We are investigating the claims. We will not conceal the situation, and we will not ask employees to accept unpaid work while the review continues."

A manager asked whether the hotel would close.

"No decision has been made to close this property. Our priority is to protect the business, preserve jobs, and establish the truth."

After the meeting, Noah approached her.

"People are frightened."

"I know."

"Some employees remember what happened when the previous management made promises. They won't believe us until they see results."

Victoria nodded.

"Then we have to give them results."

She authorized an emergency review of the disputed loans and requested independent confirmation from the banks listed in the documents.

The first bank responded within hours.

It had never issued the loan.

The second bank confirmed that its signature had been copied from an unrelated contract.

By the following morning, the investment group's claim had begun to unravel.

Investigators traced the loan documents to a financial firm connected to Eleanor's consulting company. The firm had attempted to use fabricated debt to gain leverage over the hotel group after the earlier fraud was exposed.

Eleanor denied direct involvement.

But emails showed that she had discussed the strategy with Richard Cole before his suspension.

Richard was arrested after investigators obtained evidence linking him to the forged contracts, the payroll scheme, and the attempted destruction of records.

Eleanor agreed to cooperate with the investigation after learning that the documents could expose her to criminal charges.

She admitted that she had helped finance the scheme, though she insisted she had not approved the threats or the identity fraud.

The authorities would determine her legal responsibility.

Victoria did not celebrate.

She felt relief, but also sadness that her father's family had become entangled in a plan that could have destroyed the company he had spent his life building.

The board removed Eleanor from all company responsibilities and began proceedings to recover the money connected to the consulting contracts.

With the disputed loans exposed as fraudulent, the company stabilized.

The independent audit identified enough recoverable funds to cover outstanding employee wages and several urgent supplier payments.

Victoria announced that every affected employee would receive a detailed statement explaining what had happened and how corrections would be made.

She also created an employee advisory council with representatives from housekeeping, reception, maintenance, food service, and security.

The council would meet with senior management every month.

No employee would be required to report a concern through the manager whose conduct was being questioned.

At the Sterling Grand, the changes began with small things.

Denise's personnel record was corrected.

Elisa returned to work with a revised schedule that allowed her to care for her children.

Maria received training to help oversee inventory controls.

Noah returned to the front desk as assistant manager, with clear authority and a direct reporting line to the regional operations office.

The hotel did not become perfect overnight.

But employees began to speak openly, and management began responding instead of retaliating.

One evening, Victoria walked through the lobby after a long meeting.

A young man stood near the entrance, soaked by the rain.

He was carrying a small backpack and looking uncertainly at the warm lights inside.

Victoria recognized the expression.

She approached him.

"Are you all right?"

He nodded quickly.

"I just need somewhere to get out of the rain."

Victoria looked toward the reception desk.

Noah was watching.

He smiled.

Victoria turned back to the young man.

"Come inside. We'll find you a warm place to sit."

The young man looked surprised.

"Are you sure?"

"Absolutely."

She led him toward the staff passage.

But as she passed the front desk, Noah handed her a sealed envelope.

It had arrived from the company's lawyers.

Inside was a final report detailing the full financial losses caused by Richard and Eleanor's scheme.

At the bottom was a recommendation from the board.

The Sterling Grand should remain open, but its management structure must be permanently changed.
