Chapter 15 - Four Million Dollars and One Betrayal|

The takeover plan had been designed to appear legitimate.
Richard and Eleanor intended to use the inflated hotel reports to justify a management restructuring. The consulting company would acquire control of several operational contracts, while Eleanor's investment firm would gradually gain influence over the hotel's finances.
Once the changes were complete, Victoria would have remained the legal owner but lost practical control over the business.
The fraudulent debt arrangements, altered payroll records, and consulting invoices were all connected to the same goal.
Control.
Victoria listened as Daniel explained the evidence.
"They wanted to make the company look profitable while moving money out of it. If anyone questioned the numbers, they could blame operational errors or employee misconduct."
"And if I had never visited the hotel?"
"The scheme might have continued for years."
Victoria looked at the documents.
"Then we need to stop it everywhere, not just here."
She authorized an independent audit of all twelve properties and ordered the suspension of payments to the consulting company and related entities.
The board approved the decision after receiving the preliminary findings.
Eleanor responded by calling an emergency shareholder meeting.
She accused Victoria of damaging the company through reckless investigations and claimed the hotel could face bankruptcy if the disputed contracts were canceled.
Several shareholders were alarmed.
Victoria addressed them directly.
"We will not protect revenue figures that were achieved by withholding wages or falsifying records. If the company has problems, we will identify them honestly and fix them."
One shareholder challenged her.
"Are you prepared to lose millions to prove a point?"
Victoria answered without hesitation.
"I'm prepared to recover money that was taken improperly. I'm also prepared to pay every employee what they are owed."
The room fell silent.
Noah watched from the back.
He had never seen a business owner speak about employees as though their welfare mattered as much as the balance sheet.
The shareholders eventually approved the audit, although several requested regular updates.
That evening, Victoria visited Denise and Elisa with the company's employment attorney.
The review had confirmed that both women were owed money.
Denise received reimbursement for the false towel deduction, along with a written correction to her personnel file.
Elisa received her outstanding wages and a formal offer to return to work if she wished. She chose to return only after the company agreed to provide an independent process for reporting concerns.
The news spread through the hotel.
Employees began submitting records they had kept for months. Some provided screenshots of altered schedules. Others shared messages in which Richard had threatened to reduce their hours if they complained.
A maintenance worker revealed that he had been instructed to sign off on repairs that had not been completed.
A kitchen employee reported that tip distributions had been changed without explanation.
The investigation became larger every day.
But it also became more dangerous.
One evening, Noah found a note slipped beneath his apartment door.
Stop helping Victoria. You don't know what she is risking.
He showed it to her the next morning.
She read it twice.
"Have you told the police?"
"Not yet."
"We should."
Noah hesitated.
"I don't want this to become a spectacle."
"Someone is trying to intimidate you."
"I know."
Victoria looked at him.
"Your safety matters. You don't have to prove your courage by ignoring a threat."
He nodded.
They reported the note and arranged for the building's security system to be checked.
Later that afternoon, the company received an anonymous email containing photographs of Noah leaving his apartment and entering the hotel.
The message demanded that Victoria withdraw the investigation.
If she refused, the sender threatened to release private information about her family.
Victoria stared at the screen.
"They're trying to frighten me through you."
Noah's expression hardened.
"Then don't let them."
She looked at him.
"That sounds easier than it feels."
He reached for her hand, then stopped.
"May I?"
She nodded.
He took her hand gently.
"Whatever happens, you don't have to face it alone."
For a moment, the investigation, the lawsuit, and the corporate battle seemed distant.
Then Daniel entered with an urgent update.

The anonymous email had been traced to a device registered to Eleanor Sterling's private office.
And the attached photographs had been taken by a security contractor who had worked for Richard Cole.
