Chapter 14 - The Video That Changed the Story|

Richard's lawsuit quickly became a public spectacle.

A local news outlet published an article claiming that a wealthy hotel owner had disguised herself as a homeless woman to test her own employees.

The headline suggested that Victoria had staged the incident for publicity.

Within hours, social media filled with arguments.

Some people praised her for exposing a cruel manager. Others accused her of manipulating the staff and creating a spectacle for attention.

Victoria watched the coverage from the conference room.

"I should have anticipated this."

Noah shook his head.

"You anticipated the investigation. You couldn't control what people would say afterward."

"But I chose to hide my identity."

"That was part of the reason you came here. It doesn't mean Richard's conduct was acceptable."

Victoria looked at him.

"What if people think I used you?"

Noah paused.

"Then I'll tell them the truth. You never promised me anything. I helped because you needed help."

He sat beside her.

"I don't regret it."

His words steadied her more than she expected.

The legal team reviewed the hotel footage and discovered that several camera angles had captured Richard's conduct from the moment Victoria entered the lobby.

The recordings showed that she had not approached guests, demanded money, or disrupted the hotel. They showed her asking only for shelter from the rain.

They also captured Richard ordering security to remove her.

The most important footage came from the reception desk.

It showed Noah saying, "She's a person, Richard, not a stain on the carpet."

The recording spread online after the company released it as part of a public statement.

The reaction was immediate.

Thousands of people shared the clip. Former guests described similar experiences at other hotels. Hospitality workers began posting stories about being pressured to ignore vulnerable people.

Noah's words became the center of the discussion.

He was uncomfortable with the attention.

"I was just trying to help someone."

Victoria smiled faintly.

"Sometimes that's enough to make people listen."

But the video also revealed something else.

In the background, Richard could be seen glancing toward the security camera before changing his tone. His expression suggested that he knew the interaction was being recorded.

Daniel reviewed the footage frame by frame.

"Look at the timestamp," he said.

Victoria leaned closer.

A staff member had entered the lobby just before Richard approached her. He was carrying a document envelope.

The employee was Martin Hale.

Daniel enlarged the image.

"Martin claimed he was working in the finance office at that time."

Noah frowned.

"Why would he be here?"

The team reviewed other cameras and found that Martin had met Richard in the underground garage shortly before the incident.

The footage showed Martin handing Richard a folder.

They had not yet established what it contained, but the timing was suspicious.

Victoria contacted Martin's lawyer and requested an interview.

Martin initially refused.

Then he called Daniel directly.

"I need to tell you something," he said. "The payroll records aren't the only things Richard changed."

"What else?"

"The room occupancy reports. He has been inflating revenue projections to make the hotel look more profitable than it is."

Daniel went still.

"How long?"

"At least two years."

"Why are you telling us now?"

Martin's voice trembled.

"Because Richard told me the owner would never understand the business well enough to challenge him. He said we could keep the arrangement going indefinitely."

Victoria took the phone.

"Martin, did you know who I was when I entered the hotel?"

"No."

"Then why did Richard ask you to meet him that morning?"

Martin hesitated.

"He wanted to know whether the ownership office had confirmed your identity."

Victoria exchanged a look with Daniel.

Richard had not simply reacted to her appearance.

He had been preparing for the possibility that someone from corporate would arrive unannounced.

And the false reports were only part of the scheme.

Martin revealed that Richard had been diverting revenue into a private account connected to Eleanor Sterling.

The total was far larger than the consulting invoices.

Victoria felt the room go cold.

"How much?"

Martin gave them the estimate.

Nearly four million dollars.

Then he added one more detail.

"The money was supposed to fund a takeover of the company after your father died."
