Chapter 9 - The Diploma on the WallSix months after the boardroom reckoning.

The spring sun shone warm and bright over the campus of Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.

The grand auditorium was packed with graduating students, families, and faculty members for the annual adult education and scholarship commencement ceremony.

Sitting in the front row of the VIP section was Ethan Whitmore, wearing a tailored navy suit, looking up at the stage with radiant pride and love in his eyes. Beside him sat my guidance counselor from my old high school, who had helped us clear my academic records.

The dean stepped up to the microphone.

“And now,” the dean announced proudly, “receiving the President’s Honor Award for Excellence in Pre-Medical Sciences and Human Kinetics... Claire Bennett!”

The crowd erupted into thunderous applause!

I walked across the stage wearing a black graduation gown and cap, my heart soaring as I held my official high school diploma and my full university scholarship acceptance letter in my hands.

I looked out at the audience, catching Ethan’s eyes. He stood up from his chair—without his cane—and clapped for me with all his strength, tears of pure joy streaming down his face.

I walked down the stage steps straight into his waiting arms. Ethan lifted me off my feet, spinning me around in a warm, passionate embrace under the golden sunlight.

“You did it, Claire,” Ethan whispered into my hair. “You got your future back.”

“We built it together, Ethan,” I smiled, kissing him deeply.
