Chapter 6 - The Medical BreakthroughEthan’s face went deadly pale. “A conservatorship? That means I lose total legal control of my life.”

“Not if we prove you have neural motor recovery,” I said firmly, walking over to his therapy mat.

For the past two weeks, during our private exercises, I had noticed subtle, micro-fusions of muscle twitching in Ethan’s right thigh whenever we performed resistance stimulation—a clear sign that his spinal cord lesion was incomplete, not permanent!

“Ethan,” I knelt beside his chair, looking up at him with unshakeable faith. “You’ve been practicing in secret. Show me.”

Ethan looked at me, seeing the absolute love, devotion, and confidence shining in my eyes.

He placed his hands on the armrests of his wheelchair. His jaw set into a hard, determined line. His muscles strained, his breathing deepening as he channeled every ounce of his willpower into his legs.

Slowly... agonizingly... he stood up.

He wobbled slightly, his frame shaking from months of disuse, but he remained standing on his own two feet.

I stood up with him, catching his waist, holding him close against my chest so he wouldn't fall.

Ethan looked down at me, tears of pure joy welling in his eyes. He wrapped his strong arms around my waist, pulling me close, and kissed me with a deep, passionate intensity that shattered months of pain and isolation.

“I can stand, Claire,” Ethan whispered against my lips, his voice trembling with emotion. “I can stand because of you.”

“Then on Monday,” I smiled through my own tears, “we give your uncle a show he’ll never forget.”
