Chapter 6 - The Charity TrapOn Thursday evening, the grand ballroom of the Vance Plaza Hotel was packed with the city’s high-society elite for the annual charity gala. My father and Marcus had organized the event, desperate to project an image of financial stability to their investors before the Friday deadline.

I stood at the top of the grand staircase, wearing a stunning emerald silk gown that contrasted beautifully with my silver hair. Beside me stood Adrian, once again wearing the fragile, old-man mask of Alden Vale, leaning heavily on his silver cane.

"Evelyn, darling!" my mother, Judith, cried, walking over to us with a fake, painted smile. "You look absolutely radiant. Alden, we are so honored to have you here tonight."

"The honor is mine, Judith," Adrian rasped, coughing into his gloved hand. "It is always wonderful to support... family."

Marcus and Arthur stood near the bar, watching us with a mixture of fear and calculated desperation. They knew that tomorrow was the deadline, and they still hadn't secured the funds to prevent the default.

As the speeches began, my father took the stage, his voice booming through the microphone. "Vance Construction has always been a pillar of this community. And tonight, we are proud to announce our new partnership with the Vale Foundation, which will secure our downtown development project for years to come!"

The crowd erupted into applause, but I stepped forward, taking the microphone from my father's hand before he could step down.

"Thank you, Father," I said, my voice carrying easily over the speakers. "But before we celebrate this partnership, I think there is a small administrative correction we need to address."

The ballroom fell into a quiet, curious silence. Marcus took a step forward from the bar, his face turning pale.

"I have just received the official forensic audit of Vance Construction," I said, clicking a remote in my hand.

The giant screen behind the stage flickered to life, displaying a massive, unredacted ledger showing the systematic siphoning of four million dollars to Marcus's offshore accounts, alongside the forged signatures and bribery payments from the waterfront project ten years ago.

"This... this is a lie!" Arthur screamed, lunging for the microphone, but Adrian’s security guards immediately stepped onto the stage, blocking his path.

"It's the truth, Arthur," I said, looking down at my family with cold, triumphant eyes. "And as of ten minutes ago, your construction company, your family estate, and all your frozen accounts are officially under the control of Cross Developments."
