Chapter 1 - The Peeling SkinThe heavy brass lock of the bridal suite clicked shut with a sound as cold and final as a cell door closing. I stood in the center of the room, my hands shaking so violently that the lace of my white gown rustled against the silk lining. Outside the tall arched windows of the estate, the rain hammered against the glass, reflecting the chaotic panic screaming in my chest.

For months, my family had prepared me for this exact night. "Be grateful, Evelyn," my mother had whispered, her fingers smelling of stale gin as she forced the heavy diamond necklace around my neck. "Your father’s company is drowning, and Mr. Alden Vale is throwing us a lifeline. All you have to do is be an obedient wife. Men his age don't ask for much."

But as the fragile, eighty-year-old billionaire turned around to face me, the fragile old-man persona vanished.

Alden Vale didn't lean on his silver cane. He tossed it onto the velvet sofa, his posture suddenly straightening into that of a predator. He reached up, his gloved fingers gripping the loose, wrinkled skin at his jawline, and with a slow, sickening pull, he peeled away a highly realistic, medical-grade silicone mask. The gray hair, the sagging cheeks, the liver spots—they all slid off in one piece, revealing a handsome, chiseled face of a man in his early thirties. He had dark, messy hair, piercing blue eyes, and a jagged scar cutting through his left eyebrow.

"Please... don't hurt me," I whispered, pressing my back against the cold marble fireplace.

He stared at me, his expression completely devoid of warmth. "Relax," he said, his voice deep, smooth, and laced with absolute authority. "You were never my target, Evelyn. Your corrupt family was. And tonight, my revenge begins."

I stared at him, my heart hammering against my ribs, but the sheer shock of his transformation did something strange to my fear—it turned it into a cold, sharp focus. "Who are you?"

"My name is Adrian Cross," he said, tossing the lifelike mask onto the table beside our untouched champagne. "Ten years ago, your father and your greedy brother, Marcus, stole a multi-million-dollar waterfront development project from my parents. They forged safety reports, bribed a city inspector, and forced my father into a staged bankruptcy. My father took his own life. My mother never recovered. Your family built their entire empire on the bones of mine."

I closed my eyes as the truth washed over me. I had always known my family's wealth was built on dirty secrets, but I had been kept in the dark, treated as nothing more than a bargaining chip.

"So why marry me?" I asked, opening my eyes and looking directly into his cold, blue gaze.

"Because your father and brother are desperate," Adrian sneered, stepping closer. "They sign anything when money is near. Before the ceremony, your father executed a collateral agreement in exchange for my ten-million-dollar advance. He pledged controlling shares of the construction company, your family estate, and three of their primary shell accounts. One default, Evelyn, and I legally strip them of everything they own. You were just the bait."

Adrian expected me to scream. He expected me to cry, to beg for my family’s mercy, or to collapse in hysterics.

Instead, I took a deep, steady breath. I reached up, unclasped the heavy, suffocating diamond necklace my brother had forced me to wear, and dropped it onto the table right next to his discarded silicone mask.

"You chose the wrong daughter to try and frighten, Adrian," I said, my voice completely steady. "I have copies of every single ledger Marcus told me to erase."

For the first time that night, the cold confidence on Adrian's face flickered, replaced by a look of genuine surprise.
