Chapter 4 - The Paper TrailThe study of the Cross estate was filled with the smell of old leather and paper. For three hours, Adrian and I sat at the massive desk, the light from a single green banker's lamp illuminating the documents spread between us.

Adrian had removed the mask, his dark hair messy, his brow furrowed as he analyzed the spreadsheets on my hard drive.
"This is brilliant, Evelyn," he murmured, his fingers tracing a line of transactions. "You've linked the bribes directly to the city inspector’s private bank account in Switzerland. My parents' lawyers spent years trying to find this connection, but Arthur had it buried deep behind three layers of dummy corporations."
"My father is a coward, but Marcus is clever," I said, leaning over his shoulder to point at a specific transaction. "Marcus was the one who set up the Swiss accounts. He used his private security firm as a front to launder the money. If we expose this to the federal prosecutors, the bribery charges alone will carry a fifteen-year sentence."
"But I don't just want them in prison, Evelyn," Adrian said, turning his head to look at me. Our faces were just inches apart, and I could feel the warmth of his breath against my cheek. "I want them to feel the absolute terror of losing everything. I want them to stand in the ruins of their empire, knowing they have nowhere to go."
"We can do both," I whispered, my heart skipping a beat as his blue eyes locked onto mine. "The default on Friday is the key. Marcus cannot return the siphoned money by then. He’s already spent it to cover his gambling debts in Macau."
"Then on Friday, the trap snaps shut," Adrian said, his voice dropping to a low, intimate register. He reached out, his hand gently covering mine on the desk. "You're a remarkable woman, Evelyn. I expected to marry a fragile pawn, but I found a queen."

"A queen who knows how to play her cards, Adrian," I said, a soft smile touching my lips.
For the first time since my family sold me into this marriage, the cold knot of dread in my stomach began to melt, replaced by a strange, dangerous warmth. I was no longer a victim. With Adrian beside me, I was the one writing the rules of the game.
