Chapter 2 - Blood and Balance SheetsAdrian took a slow step toward me, his blue eyes narrowing as if trying to determine if I was bluffing. "You're lying. Marcus wouldn't let a useless socialite near his financial records."

"I’m not a socialite," I said, leaning against the vanity. "For three years, I quietly studied forensic accounting at night, using a scholarship my parents mocked. They thought I was taking art history classes. But while Marcus was out drinking and gambling away our emergency funds, I was cataloging his crimes. I knew where the missing money went, whose signatures were forged, and exactly which municipal contracts were secured through bribery."
"Why didn't you go to the police?" Adrian asked, his voice low and dangerous.
"Because in this city, the police are paid by people like my father," I replied bitterly. "If I spoke up, Marcus would have had me committed to a private asylum, and my father would have covered it up. I was waiting for the right moment. I was waiting for someone who had the power to actually bring them down."
I walked over to my suitcase, opened the false bottom, and pulled out a small, encrypted external hard drive. I held it out to him.
"Every transaction, every shell company, and every off-the-books payout from the last five years is on this drive," I said. "Including the bribes paid to the city inspector during the waterfront project that ruined your family. I don't want to save them, Adrian. I want to watch them burn just as much as you do."
Adrian stared at the drive in my hand, then looked up at my face. The silence in the room stretched, heavy and electric, broken only by the sound of the rain outside.
He slowly reached out, his gloved fingers brushing mine as he took the drive. "You would betray your own blood?"
"They sold me to an eighty-year-old man to cover their debts, Adrian," I said, my voice hardening. "The moment they signed that marriage contract, they drew the line. I’m just choosing which side of it I want to stand on."

Adrian looked at the drive, then back at me. A slow, dangerous smile crept onto his handsome face. "It seems we have an unholy alliance, Evelyn. But if you play me, I will ensure you go down with them."
"I don't play games, Adrian," I said. "I balance books. And tonight, we start balancing the ledger of the Vance family."
