Chapter 7 - The Falling DominoesWithin forty-eight hours, the news of Alejandro’s spectacular downfall had spread like wildfire through the business community of Mexico City. Ruta Norte Logística issued a formal press release announcing a restructuring of their operations department, completely erasing Alejandro’s name from the company’s history.

For Alejandro and Teresa, reality set in with brutal force.

With his company credit cards cancelled and his massive salary stopped, Alejandro’s personal bank accounts—which were already depleted due to his expensive lifestyle and efforts to keep up appearances—dwindled rapidly. He had spent years relying on Mariana’s wealth, assuming that the gravy train would never end.

They were forced to check into a small, budget hotel on the outskirts of the city. Teresa sat on the edge of the cheap bed, looking at the worn carpet and the peeling wallpaper, her face pale with humiliation.

"This is a nightmare," she whispered, her voice finally losing its arrogant edge. "How did this happen, Alejandro? You told me you were the partner. You told me you built that company with her!"

"I lied, Mom!" Alejandro finally snapped, burying his face in his hands. "Okay? I lied! I was just an employee. Mariana built everything. She owned the house. She owned the cars. I had nothing of my own. And now, because of your pride, because you couldn't keep your mouth shut and had to rip her clothes, she took it all back!"

Teresa stared at her son, her jaw dropping. For the first time in her life, the illusion she had built around her perfect, wealthy son shattered. He wasn't a king. He was a fraud who had ridden the coattails of a powerful woman, and she had helped him destroy his only lifeline.

But the worst was yet to come.

Later that afternoon, Alejandro received a call from his bank. His personal credit cards, which had a secondary link to the corporate accounts for guarantee purposes, had been flagged. Because of his sudden termination and the ongoing legal disputes, the bank was demanding immediate repayment of his outstanding balances.

Then came a call from his lawyer.

"Alejandro," the lawyer said, his tone grim. "Mariana’s legal team isn't just divorcing you. They are filing civil lawsuits for the destruction of her personal property, and they are investigating financial discrepancies in the operational budget from your time as VP. If they find that you misused corporate funds for personal expenses, you could be facing criminal embezzlement charges."

Alejandro felt a cold sweat break out across his entire body. "Embezzlement? No, I... I just authorized a few personal dinners and some travel..."

"That's corporate fraud, Alejandro," the lawyer sighed. "Mariana is a powerful woman with the best legal team in the country. She isn't playing games. If I were you, I would prepare to cooperate fully and sign whatever divorce settlement she offers, because if this goes to court, you will end up in prison."

Alejandro hung up the phone, the silence of the cheap hotel room pressing down on him like a physical weight. He looked at his mother, who was now weeping softly into a paper tissue. The arrogant, boasting woman who had proudly declared "My son paid for everything!" was entirely gone. In her place was a broken, frightened old woman who had finally faced the truth.
