Chapter 2 - The Sound of Tearing SilkThe kitchen fell into a suffocating silence. Mariana looked at the white dress in Teresa’s hands. It was a symbol of her hard work, a representation of the success she had achieved through years of sleepless nights and relentless grit. To Teresa, however, it was just a weapon to be used to humiliate her daughter-in-law.

"Tear one more thing, Teresa, and tomorrow you won’t even be able to unlock this door," Mariana said.
Her voice was incredibly quiet. It wasn't a shout; it was a cold, calculated promise. The sheer calm in Mariana’s tone made the room drop by ten degrees. Even the domestic staff in the adjoining pantry froze, holding their breath.
Teresa stared at Mariana, her expression transitioning from surprise to pure, venomous rage. She looked at Mariana as if she were a servant who had dared to speak back to the mistress of the house.
"You’re threatening me?" Teresa hissed. "In my own son’s house? You are a guest here, Mariana. A temporary fixture. You have no right to speak to me that way."
Before Mariana could take a step, Teresa gripped the delicate fabric of the white dress with both hands and pulled.
Riiiiiiip.
The sound of the high-end silk splitting in two echoed through the kitchen. It was a sharp, violent noise that felt like a physical blow. A portion of the sleeve fluttered to the polished hardwood floor like a broken wing.
Mariana didn't flinch. She didn't gasp. But deep inside her, a switch flipped. The final thread of patience she had held for her marriage, for Alejandro’s weakness, and for Teresa’s insufferable arrogance snapped cleanly in two.
"Mom! Stop!" Alejandro finally raised his voice, but it was too little, too late. He stepped forward, but he didn't grab his mother's arm. He didn't demand she leave. He stood there, hands half-raised, looking like a helpless spectator at a car crash.
Teresa wasn't finished. Flush with adrenaline and the thrill of destruction, she reached into the open garment bag again and grabbed a beautiful, vibrant blue silk blouse. "Look at this garbage! You think you can dress up and pretend to be someone important? Showing off my son's money?"
She ripped the blouse down the center, throwing the pieces onto the floor. She stepped on them, her high heels grinding the delicate fabric into the dust.
Mariana stood perfectly still. The sadness she thought she would feel was entirely absent. In its place was a cold, crystalline clarity. She reached into her pocket, pulled out her phone, and opened the camera app. Quietly, smoothly, she began to record.
She captured the shredded white silk on the floor. She captured Teresa’s contorted, arrogant face as she stomped on the blue blouse. And she captured Alejandro, who quickly turned his head away from the lens, unable to look his wife in the eye.
"Teresa," Mariana said softly, holding the phone steady. "I am going to ask you one last time. Do you know who paid for those clothes?"
Teresa scoffed, posing for the camera with a mocking sneer. "Record all you want, you pathetic little girl! Go show your friends how much of a fool you are. If my son had any real sense, he would have put this house, the cars, and the bank accounts entirely in his own name before you ruined him. But don't worry—I'll make sure he corrects that mistake."
"In his name," Mariana repeated, a faint, dangerous smile touching the corners of her lips. "I see."
She stopped the recording and locked her phone. She looked at her husband one final time. He was still looking at the floor, refusing to meet her eyes.

"We are going to be late for the Santa Fe dinner, Mariana," Alejandro said, his voice trembling slightly. "Can we please just get past this and go?"
Mariana looked at him with a mixture of pity and disgust. "You can go wherever you want, Alejandro. But your mother is right about one thing. It's time everyone learned their place."
