Chapter 3 - The Paper Fortress

At Denver General Hospital, trauma surgeons treated my second and third-degree contact burns, applying specialized silver-sulfadiazine dressings and biological skin grafts to prevent nerve scarring.

Sitting beside my hospital bed at dawn was Marcus Sterling—my late grandmother’s corporate estate attorney.

"Maya," Marcus said gently, placing a thick legal docket onto my tray table. "Detective Parker submitted the video recording to the District Attorney. Daniel was denied bail on charges of first-degree felony assault, domestic torture, and reckless endangerment."

"What about the house, Marcus?" I asked, my voice raspy.

Marcus smiled, opening the folder.

"Daniel thought putting his name on the deed protected him," Marcus explained. "He forgot that under Colorado marital property statutes and the terms of your grandmother’s irrevocable trust, the initial $450,000 down payment was drawn entirely from your pre-marital capital. Furthermore, our forensic audit of Mercer Framing & Construction uncovered three years of systematic tax evasion and payroll fraud."

Marcus turned the page, revealing unredacted bank logs.

"Daniel was using your proprietary accounting software to siphon $1.2 million in commercial client escrow funds into personal offshore trading accounts," Marcus revealed. "Linda and Frank were listed as paid corporate officers, drawing six-figure salaries for no-show consulting roles."

"So they were stealing from the clients too," I realized.

"And now the Internal Revenue Service and the Colorado Attorney General have frozen every account associated with the Mercer name," Marcus said. "You have sole occupancy of the estate, full emergency financial injunctions, and an expedited divorce filing underway."

Detective Parker walked into the room, holding a sealed evidence bag containing my camera.

"The footage is airtight, Maya," Chloe smiled warmly. "He's looking at twelve to twenty years in state prison."

For the first time in two years, I leaned back against the hospital pillows and wept tears of pure, unadulterated relief.
