Chapter 9 - The Power of One Phone Call"Get out of my house, Marcus," I said, my voice barely above a whisper, yet it cut through his screaming like a razor.

"This is our house!" he roared, taking a step toward me, his hand still pointed threateningly. "I’m not going anywhere! You’re going to transfer that money back, you’re going to let my family stay, or I will burn your reputation to the ground!"

I didn't answer him. I simply unlocked my phone, tapped a single contact, and pressed call.

"Chief Davis," I said when the head of city police answered. "The intruder has breached the penthouse foyer. He is hostile, threatening property damage, and violating the emergency protective order served five minutes ago."

Within exactly thirty seconds, the private elevator doors slid open.

Four heavily armed, uniformed police officers stepped out, their tasers drawn. They didn't hesitate. They bypassed Marcus’s screaming, grabbed his arms, and forced them behind his back, the metallic click of handcuffs echoing through the high-ceilinged room.

"Marcus Vance, you are under arrest for violating a protective order, domestic harassment, and breaking and entering," the lead officer announced.

Marcus struggled against the cuffs, his face turning an even darker shade of purple as he was dragged toward the elevator. "Evelyn! You can't do this! I’ll sue you! I’ll take half of everything!"

"You'll take a state-appointed attorney, Marcus," I said, watching him get led away.

David and his family, realizing they were next if they didn't move, scrambled to their feet, grabbing their trash bags and suitcases, and ran out the service exit without looking back. Within minutes, the penthouse was quiet once again.
