The Glass Kingdom / Chapter 7 / 10

Chapter 7 - The ServeExactly thirty seconds after Marcus began his screaming tantrum, the heavy doors of the adjacent service elevator slid open.

Marcus spun around, expecting building maintenance or perhaps a security guard he could bully. Instead, a tall, professional-looking woman in a sharp gray suit stepped out, holding a thick, manila envelope. Behind her stood two uniformed police officers.

"Marcus Vance?" the woman asked, her voice calm and practiced.

Marcus blinked, his anger momentarily replaced by confusion. "Yes? Who are you?"

She stepped right up to him, bypassing his defensive posture, and slapped the thick manila folder directly against his tailored chest. "You are formally served. Emergency protective order, notice of divorce, and a civil summons for financial fraud and unauthorized asset transfer."

LEGAL CAUTION:

Any attempt to enter the property or contact the plaintiff will result in immediate arrest.

Marcus stared at the document in his hands as if it were a live grenade. His face went from flushed red to a ghostly, sickly white.

David, finally realizing the catastrophic reality of the situation—that his brother had dragged his bankrupt family into a massive, legally fraught domestic war zone—didn't even say goodbye. He looked at Marcus with a mixture of disgust and betrayal.

"You lied to us, Marc," David whispered, his voice shaking. "You told us this was your place. You told us she agreed to this."

"David, wait—" Marcus started, but his brother was already turning away.

David grabbed his crying wife’s hand, gathered his three terrified children, and marched them right back toward their battered minivan, leaving their cheap suitcases scattered on the concrete floor. The minivan’s engine roared to life, and within seconds, they were speeding out of the garage, leaving Marcus standing there completely alone.
