The Glass Kingdom / Chapter 6 / 10

Chapter 6 - Access DeniedThe sound of my voice echoing through the private garage speakers made Marcus jump. He spun around, looking up at the security camera mounted above the elevator alcove.

"Evelyn!" he yelled, his voice tight with embarrassment as his family watched him fumble. "Open the elevator. Don’t embarrass me in front of my brother. The scanner is acting up."

"The scanner is working perfectly, Marcus," I said, my voice smooth, calm, and utterly cold. "I simply deleted your access. You don't live here anymore."

Marcus’s jaw flexed. He took a step closer to the camera, his eyes wide with a mixture of confusion and building rage. "Evelyn, stop this hysterical nonsense right now! My brother’s kids are exhausted. They’ve been driving all day. Open this door before I lose my temper!"

"You lost more than your temper, Marcus," I said. "You lost your access to my bank accounts. I’ve already frozen the joint household fund. The four hundred and forty thousand dollars you stole has been flagged as unauthorized corporate fraud. And the demolition crew you hired for my studio? Cancelled."

David’s wife, Sarah, gasped, clutching her children closer to her. "David... what is she talking about? You said Marcus owned this place! You said we had our own wing!"

"He doesn't own a single brick of this building, Sarah," I said through the speaker. "He is an unemployed guest who has been living off my book royalty deals for five years. And right now, his time is up."

Marcus went completely feral. He slammed his fist against the reinforced steel elevator door, the loud clang echoing through the quiet garage. "Evelyn! Open this door! I will ruin you! I will go to the press! I will tell everyone what a cold, heartless bitch you are! I’ll destroy your career!"

"You can't destroy a career you didn't build, Marcus," I said. "And as for the press... I think they'll find the court filings far more interesting."
