Chapter 2 - The Editing of RealityThe silence of the penthouse was suffocating. I stood by the marble island, watching Marcus adjust his designer tie in the reflection of the glass window.

"I am asking you, very clearly, why you decided to move a family of five into my penthouse without my consent," I said, my voice echoing slightly in the vast, high-ceilinged room.
Marcus let out a short, ugly laugh—the kind of laugh designed to make you feel small, childish, and entirely irrational. It was a weapon he had polished over five years of marriage. "Your penthouse? Seriously, Evelyn? Are we doing this again?"
My stomach dropped into a cold, dark abyss. "Yes, Marcus. Mine. I bought it. My sole account funded the wire transfer. My name is on the deed."
He took two slow, predatory steps toward me, using his height to try and shadow my posture. "You bought it while you were my wife. In the eyes of the law, and in the eyes of everyone who matters, what's mine is yours, and what's yours is mine. That means this place is ours. And if my brother's family is moving in, they’re moving in. Get used to how things work in the real world."
MARCUS'S GOLDEN RULE:
"What's yours is ours, and what's mine is private."
"I paid for this place from my sole accounts," I repeated, my voice trembling with a cocktail of fury and disbelief. "With the money from the studio deal. A deal you had absolutely nothing to do with."
Marcus shrugged, entirely unbothered. He checked his watch, a gold piece I had bought him for his last birthday. "We are married, Evelyn. The law doesn't care about your little creative pride. I'm heading to the office to wrap up a few things. By the time I get back with David and his family at five, I expect you to have calmed down and made the guest suites presentable."
He turned on his heel and walked toward the private elevator lobby. The second the heavy steel doors slid shut with a soft, pneumatic hiss, the air returned to my lungs. My hands were shaking, but not from fear.
I opened my laptop and immediately pulled up our prenuptial agreement. My hands went completely numb as I scanned the scanned PDF document. The studio proceeds were explicitly classified as separate property, traced directly to my corporate publishing entity. The penthouse deed was registered solely under my LLC. Every single square inch of this property was legally, undeniably mine.
But then, I opened our joint household checking account.
My breath caught in my throat. Three massive, unauthorized wire transfers had been executed over the last seventy-two hours.
Transfer 1: $150,000 labeled 'Family Emergency'
Transfer 2: $80,000 labeled 'Relocation Costs'

Transfer 3: $210,000 labeled 'Capital Improvement'
Nearly half a million dollars of my money, drained from the household account Marcus had access to, vanished into the ether.
