Chapter 9 - The Trial BeginsBy August, the trial of State v. Victoria Sterling-Mitchell dominated local and national headlines.

The courtroom in downtown Columbus was packed to capacity. Reporters jostled for seats, eager to broadcast every sordid detail of how a high-society socialite had systematically tortured her stepdaughter behind closed doors.
Victoria sat at the defense table wearing a drab gray detention jumpsuit, her hair limp and unstyled, her arrogant demeanor completely shattered.
Julian Montgomery led the prosecution with breathtaking precision.
On the second day of the trial, Julian projected the security footage directly onto the courtroom monitors. The silent, horrifying images of Victoria dragging Lily by a chain filled the room. Several jurors gasped aloud, covering their mouths in horror.
When Victoria took the stand in her own defense, attempting to claim she was "stressed" and that the child was "defiant," Julian cross-examined her with surgical brutality.

"You chained a four-year-old child to a wheelchair, Mrs. Mitchell," Julian pressed, his voice ringing with cold authority across the silent courtroom. "Did that child's defiance justify psychological torture?"
Victoria stammered, broke down in tears, and ultimately refused to answer, burying her face in her cuffed hands as the gallery watched in utter contempt.
