Chapter 10 - The VerdictThe jury deliberated for a mere thirty-six minutes.
When the foreperson stood to read the verdict, the courtroom fell into a heavy, breathless silence.
Guilty on all counts.
Count one: Aggravated child abuse and torture. Count two: Unlawful restraint and imprisonment. Count three: Felony domestic endangerment.
Judge Harrison did not hesitate when sentencing.
"You abused the sacred trust of a parent and inflicted calculated, merciless cruelty upon a helpless child," Judge Harrison declared, banging his gavel with final authority. "I sentence you to eighteen years in a maximum-security state correctional facility with no possibility of early parole."

As the bailiffs led a sobbing, hysterical Victoria out of the courtroom in chains, I felt a massive, invisible weight lift off my shoulders.
