Chapter 8 - The Investigator's OfferJulian Montgomery was the lead senior prosecutor who had quietly overseen the final asset forfeiture phase of the Mitchell Foundation trial.

At thirty-four, Julian was sharp, deeply ethical, and carried an aura of calm, reassuring authority that immediately put me at ease.

"Mr. Montgomery," I said, standing up and extending my hand. "I thought all the federal filings were wrapped up last month."

"They are, Emily," Julian replied, shaking my hand warmly. His grip was firm and genuine. "I'm actually here on a personal matter—though it intersects with your foundation."

He opened his leather briefcase, pulling out a thick proposal document and placing it on the patio table.

"The state is launching a specialized task force dedicated to uncovering financial abuse and coercive control in domestic trust structures," Julian explained, his hazel eyes locking onto mine with profound respect. "We reviewed the framework you designed for the Vance Educational Equity Fund. We want you to serve as our chief advisory consultant for the state legislature."

I looked at the proposal, stunned. "You want me advising the state attorney general?"

"I've read your case file, Emily," Julian said softly. "The courage it took to stand alone in that house, protect yourself, and dismantle a corrupt system from the inside out... there is nobody more qualified in Ohio to lead this initiative."

A slow, genuine smile broke across my face.

"I'd be honored, Julian," I said.

Over the next six months, Julian and I worked closely together, drafting state legislative reforms that would later become known as Emily’s Law, protecting vulnerable spouses from financial isolation and coerced document signing.
