Chapter 4 - The House of CardsWithin minutes, federal agents and local detectives swarmed the Mitchell estate.

Margaret shrieked in absolute hysteria as agents seized her designer handbags, safe deposit box keys, and laptop computers from the master study. Ashley sat at the kitchen island sobbing into her hands, realizing her father's criminal empire had just imploded around them.
Richard was handcuffed in the foyer, his silver hair catching the morning light as federal deputies pressed him face-down against the same marble floor where he had lectured me about integrity for two years.
"You ruined us, you ungrateful little bitch!" Richard roared, straining against the steel handcuffs as deputies hauled him toward the squad cars.
I didn't flinch. I simply looked down at him with quiet, unshakeable dignity.
"You built your house on lies, Richard," I replied calmly. "Gravity finally caught up."
Two hours later, my husband, Ethan, arrived back from his business trip in St. Louis. His car screeched to a halt in the driveway, and he sprinted through the front doors, his face contorted in frantic confusion.
"Emily! What is going on?!" Ethan shouted, grabbing my shoulders in the living room while federal agents boxed up family photo albums. "My mother called me saying the FBI is raiding the house! Why is my father in jail?!"
I looked at the man I had married—the man who had repeatedly dismissed my warnings, told me I was imagining things, and demanded I submit to his family's toxic hierarchy.
"Your father tried to drug me last night, Ethan," I said, my voice deadpan and icy. "And while I was hiding in the closet recording him, we discovered he stole millions from public educational grants."
Ethan’s jaw slackened. He stepped back as if I had struck him. "That... that's impossible. Dad wouldn't..."

"Open your laptop, Ethan," I interrupted, tossing a printed summary of the forensic audit onto the coffee table. "Your name is listed as a secondary corporate officer on three of the shell companies. You have seventy-two hours to cooperate with the U.S. Attorney’s office before you’re indicted right beside him."
Ethan dropped onto the sofa, burying his face in his hands as the reality of his family's total destruction washed over him.
