Chapter 1 - The White Powder in the JuiceThe rain lashed violently against the colonial-style windows of the Mitchell estate in suburban Columbus, Ohio. Inside the master suite, the air was heavy with the smell of damp cedar, tequila, and impending dread.

At twenty-nine, I stood frozen in my bedroom doorway, my hands trembling as I stared at the glass of orange juice Richard Mitchell had just forced me to hold. A faint, unblended ring of white powder clung stubbornly to the rim of the glass.
Richard, a retired private school principal revered across the county for his spotless reputation and lectures on moral integrity, smiled a chilling, predatory smile.
"Drink it, Emily," Richard whispered, his voice dangerously low. "Or you'll find out what happens to daughters-in-law who defy this household."
Before I could react, the front door downstairs flew open with a deafening bang.
"Is anybody home?!" Ashley, my twenty-four-year-old sister-in-law, hollered drunkenly as she stumbled into the foyer.
Panic flashed across Richard’s face. He snatched the glass back from my hand, muttered an excuse, and scurried down the hall.
Minutes later, Ashley burst into my room, smelling of cheap perfume and stale wine. Complaining of a splitting headache, she snatched the glass of orange juice from my nightstand—where Richard had hastily set it down—and swallowed it in one long, desperate gulp.
Ten minutes later, Ashley collapsed onto my bed, completely unconscious.
Realizing the terrifying magnitude of what Richard had intended for me, I grabbed my smartphone, slipped into the dark linen closet across the hall, and left my bedroom door slightly ajar.
Through the narrow gap of the closet door, the rhythmic click of approaching footsteps echoed down the hallway.

Richard appeared in the doorway, holding a fresh glass. He pushed my bedroom door open, stepping into the room with calculated, terrifying confidence, believing he was about to find me helpless.
Instead, he found his own daughter lying cold on the bed.
