Chapter 2 - The Closet LensCrouched in the pitch-black linen closet, my heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. I pressed the record button on my phone, aligning the camera lens with the crack in the louvered door.

Inside the bedroom, the desk lamp cast a warm, golden glow over the mattress where Ashley lay motionless.

Richard stepped closer to the bed, peering down at her with a look of utter bewilderment that quickly twisted into frantic panic.

"Ashley?" Richard hissed, shaking her shoulder violently. "Ashley, wake up! What are you doing in here?!"

There was no response. Her arm hung limply off the side of the mattress.

Richard dropped his glass, the liquid splashing across the hardwood floor. He began pacing the room, muttering curses under his breath.

"Stupid girl... that was meant for Emily," he whispered aloud in the quiet room, his words captured crystal clear by my phone’s microphone. "If anyone finds out about the clinic... if the board sees those financial ledgers... everything I've built is gone."

My breath hitched. The clinic? Financial ledgers?

For two years, Ethan and his family had treated me like an outsider who knew nothing of their inner workings. But as Richard frantically searched Ashley’s coat pockets—pulling out a set of encrypted flash drives and a stack of confidential bank statements bearing the letterhead of the Mitchell Youth Foundation—I realized the darkness in this family went far beyond a predatory father-in-law.

They were laundering money through charitable educational funds, and Richard was using the estate as a center for predatory coercion.

Richard grabbed the flash drives, muttered a final threat to the unconscious girl, and hurried out of the room.

I stayed in the closet for ten agonizing minutes, my hands shaking as I saved three separate backup copies of the video to secure cloud servers managed by my brother, who happened to be a senior cybercrimes investigator in Chicago.

The nightmare had a name, a paper trail, and now, digital proof.
