THE DEBT OF LIFE / Chapter 1 / 10

Chapter 1 - The Choice on the HighwayEthan Walker stood in the cramped kitchen of his rented duplex, his hand trembling as he stared at the past-due hospital bill pinned to his refrigerator. Beside it hung a crayon drawing from his eight-year-old daughter, Lily: two stick figures holding hands beneath a bright yellow sun.

Four thousand two hundred dollars.

Lily’s heart condition required monthly checkups and specialized medication. Ever since his wife died in childbirth, Ethan’s entire universe revolved around keeping Lily safe. But after fourteen agonizing months of unemployment, freelancing, and mounting debt, he was running out of options.

Then came the email that felt like a miracle: an interview at Northline Technologies for a Senior Software Engineer position paying $145,000, complete with top-tier medical benefits.

On Friday morning, Ethan kissed Lily goodbye, put on his only tailored suit, and drove toward downtown Chicago with an hour to spare. Hope was finally within reach.

Then he saw the black smoke billowing into the sky.

A silver sedan had smashed into the highway guardrail. Flames flickered near the engine, and inside, a woman lay motionless over the steering wheel. Traffic kept moving. People turned their heads to look, but nobody stopped.

Ethan’s foot hovered over the accelerator. If he stopped, he would miss the interview. He would lose his chance to secure Lily’s health insurance. But as he glanced at the unconscious woman turning pale in the smoke, he couldn't just drive away.

Ethan pulled over, ran across the highway, dragged the woman onto the cold asphalt, and performed emergency CPR until her lungs gasped for air and the sirens finally arrived.
