Chapter 5: Picking Up the Pieces

Chapter 5: Picking Up the Pieces

Six months later, the Carter mansion had been sold.

The divorce had been finalized quietly, without the public scandal Victoria had once feared.

Richard never sought revenge.

He never spoke badly about his former wife in interviews or business circles.

He simply walked away.

Victoria received a fair financial settlement, but she lost far more than money.

Most of her friends slowly disappeared.

The man she had risked everything for ended the relationship only weeks after the divorce.

Without the excitement of secrecy, he had no interest in building a real life together.

For the first time in years, Victoria found herself completely alone.

Many evenings, she sat in the small condominium she had purchased after the divorce, staring at old family photographs.

Pictures of birthday parties.

Christmas mornings.

Summer vacations.

Moments that now felt painfully distant.

She often reached for her phone to call Emma.

Most days...

She put it back down.

Some wounds needed more than apologies.

Emma graduated from college that spring.

Richard proudly watched from the front row.

When her name was announced, he stood and applauded louder than anyone else in the auditorium.

After the ceremony, Emma hugged him tightly.

"We're going to be okay," she whispered.

Richard smiled through tears.

"I think we already are."

Their lives would never return to what they once had.

But they had stopped pretending.

And somehow...

That honesty became the beginning of healing.

Emma eventually learned that love alone could not hold a family together.

Trust was its true foundation.

Once trust was broken, even the most beautiful mansion became nothing more than empty walls.

As for Victoria...

She would spend years wishing she could return to one ordinary afternoon...

One unopened bedroom door...

One decision she could never take back.

The End
