Chapter 4: The Truth Comes Home

Chapter 4: The Truth Comes Home
Richard Carter arrived less than three hours later.
His black sedan rolled through the front gates just as the sun disappeared behind the trees surrounding the estate.
The moment he stepped inside the mansion, he sensed something was terribly wrong.
The house was silent.
Not peaceful.
Lifeless.
Maria stood near the foyer with red, swollen eyes.
She quietly lowered her head.
"Good evening, sir."
Richard frowned.
"Where's Emma?"
Before Maria could answer, Emma appeared at the top of the staircase.
Her eyes were red from crying.
One side of her face still carried the faint outline of a handprint.
Richard's expression changed instantly.
He hurried upstairs.
"What happened?"
"Who did this to you?"
Emma could barely force the words out.
"Mom."
Richard stared at her in disbelief.
"What?"
Emma looked directly into his eyes.
"I walked into your bedroom this afternoon."
"I wasn't supposed to."
"But I did."
Richard's heartbeat quickened.
"What are you talking about?"
Emma swallowed hard.
"She wasn't alone."
The color drained from Richard's face.
"No."
Emma nodded slowly.
"There was another man."
Silence.
The hallway seemed to shrink around them.
Richard stood motionless, unable to process what he had just heard.
Finally, he whispered,
"Take me to her."
Emma led him to the master bedroom.
Victoria was still there.
She had changed into another dress, washed away her makeup, and tried to compose herself.
But nothing could erase the fear in her eyes.
Richard stepped inside.
Neither of them spoke for several seconds.
After twenty-eight years of marriage...
Thousands of shared mornings...
Countless family photographs...
Neither knew how to begin.
Richard finally broke the silence.
"Is it true?"
Victoria lowered her eyes.
"Richard..."
"Answer me."
His voice remained calm.
Too calm.
Emma had never heard her father sound like that before.
Victoria slowly nodded.
"Yes."
One word.
Just one.
It shattered twenty-eight years of trust.
Richard closed his eyes.
His shoulders sagged as though decades had suddenly settled upon them.
"When?"
Victoria wiped away fresh tears.
"It started last year."
Richard let out a slow, painful breath.
"So every business trip..."
"Every phone call..."
"Every time you told me you missed me..."
Victoria began crying again.
"I never meant to hurt you."
Richard looked at her with quiet disbelief.
"You didn't mean to hurt me?"
"You invited another man into our home."
"Our bedroom."
"Our marriage."
Victoria reached toward him.
"I was lonely."
Richard stepped back before she could touch him.
"So was I."
"I spent years away building this company because I believed I was building a future for us."
"I never betrayed you."
The room fell silent again.
Emma watched the two people she had admired all her life standing on opposite sides of the room like strangers.
Richard slowly removed his wedding ring.
He stared at it for several seconds.
Then he placed it carefully on the nightstand.
"I don't think I can wear this anymore."
Victoria gasped.
"Richard..."
"I'll move into the guest house tonight."
"My attorneys will contact yours tomorrow."
"No..."
Her voice cracked.
"Please don't do this."
Richard looked at her one final time.
"I didn't do this."
"You did."
Without another word, he turned and walked out.
Emma followed him into the hallway.
Just before reaching the staircase, Richard stopped.
Without looking back, he asked quietly,
"Did you tell anyone else?"
Emma shook her head.
"No."
Richard nodded.
"Thank you."
He paused.
"I'm sorry you had to carry this alone."
For the first time that day, Emma broke down completely.
Her father wrapped his arms around her.
Neither of them spoke.
May you like
They simply stood there in the silence...
...mourning a family that no longer existed.
