Chapter 2: The Man Behind the Curtain

Chapter 2: The Man Behind the Curtain

Emma didn't move.

The sting on her cheek was fading, replaced by something colder.

Something sharper.

She stared at her mother in silence.

For the first time in her life, Victoria Carter looked afraid.

Not angry.

Not offended.

Afraid.

Emma slowly lowered her hand from her face.

"You said you had a migraine," she said quietly.

Victoria forced a laugh that sounded painfully unnatural.

"I do."

"You burst into my room without permission. Of course you startled me."

Emma's eyes drifted past her mother.

The king-size bed remained slightly unmade.

One pillow rested on the floor.

The expensive comforter had been hastily pulled flat, as though someone had tried to erase signs of movement only seconds earlier.

Victoria noticed Emma looking.

She stepped sideways, deliberately blocking the view.

"There is nothing to look at," she snapped.

"Leave. Now."

Emma ignored the command.

Instead, she took one slow step forward.

Then another.

Victoria's breathing quickened.

"Emma."

"I'm warning you."

"Stop."

Emma's voice remained calm.

"Who was talking?"

Victoria blinked.

"What?"

"I heard a man."

"You weren't alone."

For a split second, Victoria's face lost all color.

Then she recovered.

"You imagined it."

"I've been watching television."

Emma frowned.

"The television isn't even on."

Silence.

The excuse collapsed the moment it left Victoria's lips.

Emma took another step.

Victoria grabbed her wrist.

Hard.

"I said leave."

Emma looked down at her mother's trembling fingers.

"You've never been this frightened before."

"I'm frightened because my daughter has forgotten every boundary."

"No," Emma replied.

"You're frightened because I'm about to discover something."

Victoria tightened her grip.

"Don't test me."

Emma slowly pulled her arm free.

The room fell silent again.

Then...

A soft thump.

It came from inside the walk-in closet.

Both women froze.

Emma turned toward the sound.

Victoria reacted instantly.

"It's the air conditioner," she said too quickly.

Emma didn't answer.

Another sound followed.

A muffled cough.

This time there was no mistaking it.

Someone else was inside the room.

Emma walked toward the closet.

Victoria rushed in front of her.

"No!"

The single word exploded from her mouth with such panic that it echoed through the bedroom.

Emma stared at her.

"You said no one was here."

"There isn't."

"Then move."

Victoria didn't.

Instead, she spread both arms across the closet doors like a human shield.

"You've gone far enough."

Emma's heart pounded.

Every instinct told her she already knew the answer.

She simply hadn't wanted to believe it.

Without warning, she stepped sideways.

Victoria lunged to block her.

The two collided.

Victoria lost her balance for a fraction of a second.

It was all Emma needed.

She reached around her mother...

Grabbed the closet handle...

And pulled.

The door swung open.

A tall man stumbled backward, shielding his face from the sudden light.

His dress shirt hung open.

His tie was missing.

His hair was disheveled.

Emma had never seen him before.

For several endless seconds, nobody spoke.

Victoria closed her eyes as if wishing the entire moment would disappear.

The stranger looked toward the floor, too ashamed to meet Emma's gaze.

Emma finally broke the silence.

"So..."

"This is your migraine."

Victoria's lips trembled.

"It's not what you think."

Emma laughed once.

A short, hollow laugh filled with disbelief.

"Really?"

"What exactly am I supposed to think?"

The man cleared his throat.

"I should go."

"You should have never been here," Emma replied without taking her eyes off her mother.

Victoria reached toward her daughter.

"Emma, please."

But Emma stepped back.

Tears burned behind her eyes.

Not because she had discovered an affair.

Because, in a single moment, every happy memory of her family suddenly felt like a lie.

And somewhere hundreds of miles away...

Her father still believed he had the perfect marriage.

May you like

He had no idea that everything he had spent decades building had just begun to collapse.
