Chapter 3: A Daughter's Choice

Chapter 3: A Daughter's Choice
For several long seconds, the room remained frozen.
No one spoke.
No one breathed.
Emma stood at the closet doorway, staring at the stranger as though the world had tilted beneath her feet.
The man finally gathered enough courage to look up.
He appeared to be in his early forties.
Expensively dressed.
Well-groomed.
The kind of man who belonged in boardrooms and luxury hotels—not hiding inside another man's bedroom closet.
He swallowed hard.
"I'm sorry," he said quietly.
Emma didn't even look at him.
"Don't apologize to me."
Her eyes remained locked on Victoria.
"Apologize to my father."
Victoria's composure shattered.
"Emma, please. Listen to me."
"No."
"You've already had months to explain."
Victoria took a cautious step forward.
"It isn't as simple as it looks."
Emma laughed bitterly.
"I caught another man hiding in your closet."
"What part of that is complicated?"
The stranger lowered his head.
Victoria shot him a desperate glance before turning back to her daughter.
"Your father and I... we've been unhappy for years."
Emma felt something inside her break.
"So that's your excuse?"
"You were lonely?"
Victoria's voice trembled.
"You don't understand marriage."
"No," Emma replied.
"But I understand loyalty."
Silence settled over the room again.
The stranger cleared his throat.
"I'll leave."
Victoria nodded weakly.
Without another word, the man hurried past Emma, unable to meet her eyes.
His footsteps echoed down the hallway before the front door slammed shut.
Only mother and daughter remained.
Emma looked around the bedroom.
Every expensive piece of furniture.
Every framed family photograph.
Every carefully chosen decoration.
None of it felt real anymore.
It had all become part of an elaborate stage set.
Victoria reached for Emma's hand.
Emma pulled away immediately.
"Don't."
Tears filled Victoria's eyes.
"I never wanted you to find out like this."
Emma's voice grew colder.
"So you planned to let Dad spend the rest of his life believing a lie?"
Victoria couldn't answer.
Emma shook her head.
"He trusted you."
"He defended you."
"He worked eighteen-hour days to give us this life."
"And this is how you thanked him?"
Victoria covered her face and began to cry.
"I made a mistake."
Emma's expression hardened.
"A mistake is forgetting an anniversary."
"A mistake is burning dinner."
"This..."
She looked toward the still-open closet.
"This was a choice."
Victoria sobbed openly now.
"It only happened a few times."
Emma stared at her mother.
"How many lies did it take to make that possible?"
Victoria remained silent.
Emma already knew the answer.
Too many.
She reached into her pocket and pulled out her phone.
Victoria's eyes widened instantly.
"What are you doing?"
Emma unlocked the screen.
"I'm calling Dad."
Victoria rushed forward.
"No!"
She grabbed Emma's wrist.
"Please don't."
"It will destroy him."
Emma slowly looked into her mother's tear-filled eyes.
"No."
"You already did that."
"I'm just refusing to help you hide it."
Victoria's knees gave way.
She collapsed beside the bed, crying uncontrollably.
Emma hesitated.
For one painful moment, she saw not the woman who had betrayed her father...
...but the mother who had tucked her into bed as a child.
The woman who had taught her to ride a bicycle.
Who had kissed scraped knees.
Who had celebrated every birthday.
Her finger hovered above Richard Carter's contact.
She closed her eyes.
Once she pressed the button...
There would be no going back.
Her family would never be the same again.
Emma opened her eyes.
Then...
She tapped Call.
The phone rang once.
Twice.
Three times.
Finally, Richard answered.
His familiar, cheerful voice came through the speaker.
"Hey, sweetheart."
"I'm just walking into a meeting."
"Is everything okay?"
Emma felt tears spill down her cheeks.
She took a shaky breath.
"No, Dad."
"It's not."
May you like
"I need you to come home."
