Chapter 6 - The Caldwell InquiryBy Friday afternoon, the rumor mill in Cedar Bluff had reached a boiling point.

The photographer—furious about his unpaid $4,500 invoice—withheld the digital release of Brooke’s wedding album, posting a notice on his professional website that the gallery was locked pending settlement of the account.

Margaret Caldwell noticed the delay immediately. When she called the photographer to inquire about her son's photos, the photographer spoke plainly.

“Mrs. Caldwell, we haven't been paid,” the photographer revealed. “The primary guarantor from London pulled her financial backing after the mother of the bride publicly disowned her at the barn entrance.”

Margaret went deathly quiet. “The primary guarantor... from London?”

“Clara Bennett,” the photographer said. “The daughter who flew eighteen hours to bring a gift, whom Diane Bennett passed off as a confused cousin.”

Margaret hung up the phone, her face burning with deep embarrassment and rage. She drove straight to my parents' house in Cedar Bluff.
