Chapter 2 - The Hotel Desk CancellationI lowered the heavy gift box onto the stone step. âKeep it,â I said. âItâs for Brooke.â

Then I turned around. I walked back through the fairy lights while guests continued arriving around me. Behind me, the quartet began playing. I got into my rental car, closed the door, and sat there with both hands in my lap. I didnât cry. Something had simply gone still.
I drove back to the hotel, walked upstairs in the same wrinkled dress, and sat on the edge of the bed. For a long time, I did nothing. Then I saw my laptop on the little desk by the window. That was when I remembered something my mother had been very careful to ask me about before I flew over: the final balances.
I changed clothes, opened the laptop, and pulled up the contracts one by one.
Meadow Creek Barn. Cedar Ridge Table Catering. The florist. The photographer. The musicians. My legal name appeared at the bottom of every agreement, backed by my corporate line of credit in London.
The remaining balances werenât due until Thursday after the wedding. Almost $38,000 was still outstanding.
I sat alone at that hotel desk listening to the air conditioner hum. Then I picked up my phone. The first call went to the barn coordinator.
âI need to update the billing information attached to Saturdayâs event,â I said smoothly.
âIs there a problem with the event, Ms. Bennett?â the coordinator asked.
âNo. The event can continue. But as the primary guarantor, I am exercising my contractual right to revoke authorization for future disbursements. Please direct all remaining invoices to my parents, Arthur and Diane Bennett, at their primary residence.â
One by one, I called the caterer, the florist, the photographer, and the quartet. I transferred the liability directly back to my parents' home address, attached certified notices of revocation, and authorized my bank to reject any incoming charges from the Tennessee vendor accounts.

When the final call ended, twelve minutes had passed.
I booked a first-class ticket back to London, packed my bags, and checked out of the hotel before dawn.
