Chapter 3 - The Atlantic CrossingBy the time the Boeing 777 reached cruising altitude over the Atlantic Ocean, the inflight Wi-Fi began buzzing with incoming notifications.

My phone screen illuminated with thirty-two missed calls from my mother, eighteen from my father, and a barrage of frantic text messages from my sister, Brooke.
MOTHER: Clara! Where are you?! The venue manager just emailed us an invoice for $12,500!
BROOKE: Clara, what did you do?! The photographer said his deposit failed! Call Mom right now!
FATHER: Answer your phone, Clara. This is absurd. You are ruining your sister's honeymoon.
I leaned back in my leather seat in First Class, sipping a glass of sparkling water, looking out at the white clouds ten thousand feet below.
For thirty-one years, I had been the invisible shield for my familyâs fragile pride. When my fatherâs hardware business defaulted on its taxes six years ago, I quieted the collection agencies using my savings. When Brooke wrecked her first car without insurance, I paid the repair bill so she wouldn't lose her driver's license.

I switched my phone to airplane mode and closed my eyes, sleeping peacefully for seven hours.
