Chapter 4 - The Eviction Notice

"This is a joke," Graham stammered, standing up so fast his chair rolled back and hit the wall. "Evelyn, what is this? Some kind of cheap theatrical stunt? You’re a freelance designer! You don't have a penny to your name!"
I walked slowly to the head of the table, looking down at Vivian. She was staring at the legal document, her hands shaking so violently she dropped her silver pen. The name Evelyn Vale was printed in bold, gold-embossed lettering at the top of the corporate charter.
"I am the founder of Vale International, Graham," I said, my voice calm, level, and terrifyingly cold. "I bought Harrington Luxe three years ago through a subsidiary because your father was a terrible businessman who was about to bankrupt this family. I kept you employed because I wanted to believe you had potential. But it turns out, you’re just as incompetent in business as you are as a father."
"You... you lied to us!" Vivian gasped, her voice rising to a shrill, hysterical pitch. "You played us!"
"No, Vivian," I replied, leaning over the table, my eyes locking onto hers. "I lived simply. You are the ones who chose to treat a simple woman like garbage. You are the ones who believed that wealth gave you the right to put my ten-day-old sons into a freezing blizzard."
I turned to Marcus. "Deliver the second package."
Marcus opened his briefcase and pulled out a bright red folder, sliding it directly in front of Graham.
"This is an immediate, non-negotiable eviction notice for the property at 1200 Cherry Hills," Marcus announced. "The estate is registered to a trust owned by Vale International. Since the lease agreement has been violated due to illegal tenant activity—specifically, domestic neglect and child endangerment—you have exactly twenty-four hours to pack your bags and vacate the premises."

Graham looked at me, his eyes wide with absolute, naked terror. "Evelyn, please... we're married! That's my home!"
"Not anymore," I said, turning on my heel. "You have twenty-four hours, Graham. Make sure you don't leave any trash behind."
