Chapter 1 - The Cold Threshold

The icy wind screamed across the manicured lawns of the Harrington estate, biting through the thin fabric of my nightgown. Snow fell in heavy, silent flakes, dusting my wet hair and the fragile white blankets wrapped around my ten-day-old twins. One of them whimpered, a tiny, fragile sound that broke my heart. The other slept, his chest rising and falling beneath my shaking hands.
"Get out and take your bastards with you!" my mother-in-law, Vivian Harrington, shrieked, her face twisted in a mask of pure, ugly venom. She stood in the doorway of the mansion, wrapped in an expensive silk robe, her diamonds glittering like ice under the grand crystal chandelier of the foyer.
My husband, Graham, stepped forward, his breath heavy with the scent of expensive whiskey. With one brutal motion, he shoved a heavy leather suitcase into my ribs and slammed the solid oak door.
"Don't make me laugh, Evelyn," Graham sneered through the glass pane before locking it. "My mother warned me about you. A cheap, useless designer trying to trap me with a pair of nameless kids. You should be grateful we let you stay this long."
I stood on the stone steps, looking down at my babies. They thought I was a helpless, broke seamstress. They believed they had discarded me like trash.
What they didn’t know was that I was Evelyn Vale, the founder and CEO of Vale International Holdings.
Net worth: eight billion dollars.
My fingers were numb from the freezing cold, but my hands were steady as I pulled my phone out of my pocket. I made one call.
"Marcus," I said, my voice cutting through the winter wind like steel. "Begin the emergency asset freeze. Full disclosure package. Legal, corporate, personal."

A brief pause on the other end. "At once, Ms. Vale," my general counsel replied.
I looked back at the towering mansion, a cold smile touching my lips. They had no idea that the very roof over their heads belonged to me.
