Chapter 2 - The Aftermath of Chaos

The silence following the crash was heavy, broken only by the steady patter of rain against the Philadelphia penthouse glass. Sadie wiped her mouth, her chest heaving as she stared up at Dominic Russo. “Sadie,” she whispered, her voice cracking. Dominic didn’t shout. He crouched down slightly to match her eye level, ignoring the steaming coffee pooling around his Italian leather shoes. “You dropped a three-gallon hot urn on a man who was about to cave my skull in, Sadie,” he said evenly. “That makes you either an incredible assassin or the luckiest waitress in Pennsylvania.” Sadie shook her head rapidly. “I just didn't want it on my face! I didn't mean to hit him!” Dominic let out a low, humorless breath that sounded almost like a chuckle. He signaled to his surviving bodyguards, who quickly swarmed the room, securing the perimeter and checking the massive unconscious assassin. “Get this trash out of my sight,” Dominic ordered, before turning his undivided attention back to Sadie. He extended a large, steady hand to help her up. Terrified, she took it, finding his grip surprisingly warm and firm. Dominic realized instantly that this girl was an innocent civilian caught in a crossfire, but her accidental intervention had completely disrupted a hit that should have succeeded. It meant only one thing: there was a leak deep inside his security detail.
