Chapter 7 - Breaking the WallsOver the next month, Oakridge witnessed a miracle.

The eviction notice on Ramón’s shop was canceled. Heavy construction crews arrived to renovate the building, adding modern lifts, new diagnostic gear, and a warm, beautiful front office.
Ramón hired two local young mechanics who needed work, giving them fair wages and mentorship.
Through it all, Teresa visited every week, ostensibly to oversee the fleet transition—but in reality, she came to see Ramón and Bella.
One evening in mid-January, Teresa stayed late at the shop. The snow was falling outside, wrapping the building in quiet isolation.
Bella was asleep on the sofa in the newly renovated office. Ramón and Teresa sat at his desk, reviewing equipment manifests over two mugs of hot coffee.
“You look different than you did on Christmas Eve,” Ramón noted softly, studying her face in the warm light.
Teresa smiled slightly. “How so?”

“Less burdened,” he said. “That night on the road, you looked like you were carrying the world on your shoulders.”
Teresa looked down at her coffee mug, a rare moment of vulnerability slipping through. “My life is very full, Ramón, but it’s also very empty. People only see the business, the money, the empire. Nobody looks at me the way you did that night—just a person who needed help.”
