Chapter 8 - Cracks in the Greedy Son“Daniel Mercer,” Detective Marcus Hill declared, stepping forward with an official arrest warrant. “You are under arrest for felony elder abuse, endangerment, grand larceny, and corporate forgery.”

Daniel’s eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated terror. “ELDER ABUSE?! Are you crazy?! I was on vacation! I left her food and water!”

“You left an incapacitated woman trapped on a second floor after selling her mobility equipment,” Detective Hill replied coldly. “The audio and video recordings from the house security system captured every word you said.”

Kendra shrieked, backing away from Daniel toward the gate. “I didn't do anything! It was all his idea! He told me his mother was rich and didn't care about money!”

“Kendra, shut up!” Daniel screamed, thrashing as two officers grabbed his arms, forcing him onto his knees on the paved courtyard!

The metallic click-clack of heavy steel handcuffs snapping around Daniel’s wrists echoed across the quiet estate.

I sat in my wheelchair, watching my only son weep on the pavement—the same pavement where he had loaded my wheelchair into a stranger’s truck six days ago.

He looked up at me, his eyes full of desperate, pathetic tears.

“Mom! Please!” Daniel sobbed, his voice cracking. “I’m your son! You can’t let them do this to me! Tell them it was a mistake!”

I looked down at him, my heart breaking for the boy he used to be, but my soul unyielding against the monster he had become.

“You told me I don't go anywhere anyway, Daniel,” I said softly, my voice carrying clearly across the courtyard. “Now, you won't be going anywhere for a very long time.”
