Chapter 1 - The Wheels on the DrivewayThe sound of my wheelchair rolling down the driveway was the last thing I expected to hear from the upstairs bedroom. By the time I reached the window, my son was loading it into a strangerâs pickup truckâand smiling.

âDaniel!â I shouted, my fingernails digging into the wooden sill. âWhat are you doing?â
He glanced up, annoyed rather than ashamed. At thirty-four, my only son had perfected the expression of a man inconvenienced by consequences.
âSelling it,â he called back casually. âRelax. I got a good price.â
âThat chair was custom-fitted!â I yelled, my voice cracking with desperation. âI cannot get downstairs without it!â
His girlfriend, Kendra, leaned against their rented luxury SUV wearing oversized sunglasses, sipping a iced latte. âWeâre going to CancĂșn, Evelyn. The resort deposit was due today.â
Daniel shrugged. âYou donât go anywhere anyway.â
The buyer drove off with my motorized chair strapped behind his truck bed. Daniel came inside long enough to collect two designer suitcases and the passports I had paid to renew. He left a bottle of water on the bedroom floor, beyond easy reach, and placed a bag of crackers beside it.
âThereâs food downstairs in the pantry,â he said, slinging his duffel bag over his shoulder.
âI cannot get downstairs, Daniel!â
âYouâll figure it out. Weâll be gone six days.â
I stared at him, searching his face for the boy who had once cried when I cut my finger in the kitchen. He never returned. Instead, he held out his hand.
âI need the trust debit card too. For resort incidentals.â
âNo.â
May you like
His smile hardened into something cruel. âFine. I already used the primary household credit card anyway.â
Then he turned his back, walked out, and the heavy oak front door slammed shut. The SUV engine roared, and silence filled the grand estate like rising water.
