Chapter 4 - The Shadows in the Estate

Over the next three weeks, Rinaldi Manor transformed into a sanctuary of warmth and light.
The children flourished. Marco’s grades improved dramatically under my daily tutoring; Sofia and Matteo slept peacefully through the night without night terrors; and young Nico began speaking freely, often following me around the kitchen to help prepare dinner.
Victor began coming home from his corporate offices at 5:30 PM every evening, abandoning his late-night syndicate meetings to sit at the head of the dinner table with his family. The cold, ruthless don who had terrified the New York underworld was slowly shedding his armor, laughing at Matteo’s silly jokes and watching his children play in the garden with radiant pride.
Late in the evenings, after the children were tucked into their beds, Victor and I would sit in the library beside the crackling fireplace. We talked for hours—not about business or court cases, but about our childhoods, our dreams, and the shared grief of rebuilding a life after devastating loss.
The unspoken attraction between us grew with every shared glance, every gentle brush of his hand against mine, and the quiet, electric tension that filled the room whenever we were near.
However, the shadows of Victor's past were never far behind.
On a stormy Tuesday night, while the children were asleep, an alarm sounded across the estate's security grid.
Victor jumped up from his leather armchair, reaching for the concealed 9mm pistol beneath his jacket.
"Stay in the library with Lucia, Serena," Victor commanded, his voice dropping into the icy tone of a wartime commander. "Lock the steel security door from the inside."
Outside on the grand driveway, Victor’s security team intercepted a black sedan that had breached the outer perimeter gates.
Pinned against the hood of the vehicle by four armed Rinaldi enforcers was Richard—my ex-husband—drunk, disheveled, and wielding a camera with a telephoto lens.
Victor walked out into the pouring rain, stopping two feet from Richard.
"Who the hell are you?!" Richard slurred, struggling against the guards. "I'm here to get my daughter! That woman is keeping my kid in a mafia house!"
Victor leaned down, his eyes turning to black ice as his hand wrapped around Richard’s collar, lifting him off the pavement with effortless strength.
"You have five seconds to listen to me, Richard," Victor whispered, his voice deadly quiet. "You forfeited your right to be a father when you abandoned your daughter and used corrupt judges to extort an innocent mother. If you ever set foot within five miles of Serena or Lucia again, I will not call the police. I will make you disappear from the face of the earth."
Victor tossed Richard back onto the wet asphalt like a broken doll.

"Take his camera, erase the hard drives, and drop him outside the county precinct," Victor ordered his men.
As the car was towed away into the dark, Victor walked back into the manor, his resolve to protect our new family burning brighter than ever.
