Chapter 1 - The Blood Beneath the Cabin DoorThe moment I saw my daughter lying bloodied at her husband’s feet, I knew someone was going to pay. But when three faint knocks came from behind a locked cabin door—and I noticed a thin ribbon of fresh blood creeping across the yacht’s polished floor—I realized Andrea wasn’t the only person in danger. Someone else was trapped inside. And my son-in-law had no intention of letting either of them return to shore alive.

The first words Daniel Whitmore spoke to me aboard the Aura weren’t an apology. They were a threat.

“If you refuse to transfer control of your company,” he said, wearing the smug grin I’d come to despise, “your daughter may never make it back to shore.”

For several seconds, I said nothing. I simply looked around. The Aura was the yacht I’d purchased for Andrea’s twenty-seventh birthday. Sleek, elegant, and worth more than most people would earn in several lifetimes, it floated in the sparkling waters off Key West beneath a flawless blue sky. From a distance, it looked like paradise. Up close, paradise had become a crime scene.

Music thundered from the speakers. Champagne glasses clinked. Guests laughed and talked around the deck as though nothing unusual had happened.

Then I saw Andrea. My daughter was lying beside the jacuzzi. Her white dress had been torn apart. One side of her face was so swollen I barely recognized her. Dark bruises circled both wrists, and dried blood stained the corner of her mouth.

“Dad
” Her voice was barely a whisper.

I rushed toward her and dropped to my knees, cradling her shoulders. She reached for my hand, her fingers trembling wildly.

“I didn’t fall,” she breathed painfully. “Daniel did this... because I found out what he was planning.”

For thirty-five years, I had built Quinn Marine Enterprises from a tiny shipyard into one of the most powerful maritime corporations in the country. Daniel thought seeing my daughter like this would make me panic. He thought rage would make me reckless. But the angrier I became, the calmer I looked.

I gently squeezed Andrea’s hand. “Is anyone else hurt?”

Her eyes filled with terror as she glanced toward the locked master cabin.

That was when I saw it: a thin stream of fresh blood creeping from underneath the wooden door.

Then—Knock. Knock. Knock. Three faint sounds came from inside.

Daniel casually lifted his champagne glass. “It’s probably nothing. Something must’ve fallen.”

“Open that door,” I commanded, standing up.

Daniel laughed right in my face. “Sign over forty percent of Quinn Marine, Mr. Quinn, or Andrea takes the blame for whatever happened today.”

While he kept talking, I lowered my hand casually to my side. My thumb pressed the hidden button on my satellite watch. A tiny vibration confirmed activation: live audio transmission directly to my head of security and the United States Coast Guard.

Andrea pulled me close, whispering into my ear: “The woman inside is Peyton, your CFO. She found proof he’s been stealing millions from the company. He planned to take us to open water... so neither of us would ever come back.”

Just then, the yacht’s heavy diesel engines roared to life beneath our feet. The dock began slipping away as the Aura accelerated toward the deep, open horizon.
