Chapter 6 - The Medical EvidenceThe preliminary hearing was set for Friday morning at the county courthouse.

Daniel and Vivian were led into Courtroom 302 wearing orange detention jumpsuits. Without their designer clothes, manicured nails, and luxury cars, they looked small, panicked, and completely ruined.

In the gallery sat my father, my mother, and myself. I wore dark protective sunglasses, holding my father’s arm for support.

When Judge Margaret Thomas took the bench, Daniel’s attorney immediately stood up to argue for emergency bail.

“Your Honor,” Vance argued, putting on a brave face. “My clients are respected business owners in this community. This incident was a minor domestic dispute between a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. We request reasonable bail so Mr. Cross can save his business from predatory foreclosure.”

Prosecutor Sarah Jenkins stood up, plugging a flash drive into the courtroom projection screen.

“Your Honor,” Prosecutor Jenkins countered, “the state submits Exhibit A—4K cloud video captured from the scene.”

The entire courtroom went silent as the video played across sixty-inch high-definition monitors.

The image was terrifyingly clear: Vivian spraying the chemical directly into my face, Daniel grabbing my arms to pin me still, and their cold, cruel dialogue echoing through the silent courtroom speakers.

Vivian: “A filthy, penniless woman like you doesn’t belong in this family.” Daniel: “Stop overreacting. It’s disinfectant, not acid.”

Several jurors sitting in the gallery gasped aloud. Judge Thomas’s face turned red with quiet outrage as she stared at the screen, then down at Daniel and Vivian.

“Furthermore,” Prosecutor Jenkins continued, “we have submitted certified medical reports showing Clara Hart suffered severe chemical burns to her corneas. This was not a minor dispute, Your Honor. This was a premeditated, cruel assault.”

Judge Thomas slammed her gavel down with a sharp, echoing crack.

“Bail is DENIED,” Judge Thomas ruled coldly. “Both defendants will remain in federal detention pending trial.”

Vivian let out a loud, hysterical shriek, collapsing onto the defense table, while Daniel stared at me with wild, pathetic, pleading eyes.
