Chapter 2 - The Cloud FootageBy four o'clock in the morning, while I rested under heavy pain medication in a private room, my mother sat in the hospital waiting area with her tablet open on her lap.

With three taps on the screen, she accessed my encrypted cloud server.
The video file from 5:14 PM was crystal clear. High-definition 4K video captured the entire foyer: Vivian Cross holding the industrial disinfectant bottle, spraying it directly into my face at point-blank range, and Daniel stepping behind me to grab my arms, holding me motionless while I screamed.
The audio was horrifyingly clear:
Vivian: âA filthy, penniless woman like you doesnât belong in this family.â Daniel: âStop overreacting. Itâs disinfectant, not acid.â
Mother saved three backup copies onto encrypted thumb drives, sending one directly to the Chief of Police, another to our lead family attorney, and keeping the third in her purse.
My father sat beside her, holding his cell phone to his ear. His face was stone.
âArthur,â my father spoke into the receiver, addressing the chief executive officer of Hartwell Capital. âPull up the loan portfolio for Cross Grand Hotels.â
A brief pause followed over the line.
âThey have a twelve-million-dollar balloon payment due this Friday at five o'clock,â Arthur reported over the speakerphone. âThey submitted a request for a ninety-day extension yesterday afternoon.â
My father looked at my mother, then through the glass window at my bandaged face.

âDeny the extension,â my father ordered, his voice cold as mountain iron. âCall the loan immediately under the moral turpitude and default clauses. I want a full forensic audit of their corporate assets initiated by eight AM.â
âUnderstood, Mr. Hart,â Arthur replied. âConsider Cross Grand Hotels in default.â
