Chapter 4 - The Loan DefaultThe arrest at the country club was swift, merciless, and caught on video by six high-society guests who immediately uploaded the footage to social media.

Within an hour, the clip of Vivian screaming as she was led out in handcuffs, followed by Daniel pale and stuttering in his designer suit, went viral across the country.
Meanwhile, at the corporate headquarters of Cross Grand Hotels downtown, teams of forensic accountants from Hartwell Capital walked in, accompanied by federal marshals.
Every ledger was seized. Every computer drive was locked down.
In the hospital, the ophthalmologist carefully removed the bandages from my eyes to perform a second evaluation.
I blinked against the soft ambient light. The world was still blurry, but the doctor let out a long breath of relief.
âThe cornea damage is severe, Clara,â Dr. Aris said gently, âbut the saline irrigation at the scene saved your deep eye tissue. With specialized eye drops and rest, your vision will fully recover over the next month.â
My mother sat beside my bed, holding my hand. âDid you hear that, sweetie? Youâre going to be okay.â
A quiet knock came at the door. My father walked into the room, holding a leather briefcase.
âRobert,â Mother asked. âHow are the foreclosure proceedings?â
My father smiledâa cold, sharp expression I had rarely seen on his face.
âCross Grand Hotels is officially in receivership,â Father announced. âHartwell Capital took legal control of their three primary hotel properties twenty minutes ago. Daniel and Vivian no longer own a single room in this city.â

I looked at my father through my misty, recovering vision. âDid Daniel try to call you?â
âHe called my office six times from the precinct holding cell,â Father said, pulling a tablet from his briefcase. âHe thought he was calling a retired schoolteacher to ask for bail money. When my executive assistant answered the line and identified me as Chairman of Hartwell Capital, he stopped talking.â
