Chapter 3 - The False NarrativeAt nine o'clock the following morning, Daniel and Vivian were holding a lavish breakfast party at the Cross Country Club.

They had invited twelve high-society friends, boasting openly about Danielâs wedding and taking credit for "taking in a charity case."
âSheâs so emotional,â Vivian laughed, taking a sip of mimosa while adjusting her diamond bracelet. âYou know how girls from those poor rural families are. She had a complete hysterical breakdown over a little household cleaner. We had to send her to the hospital just to calm her nerves.â
Daniel laughed along with his mother, cutting into his steak. âMy mother was just trying to help her clean up her clothes. Clara completely blew it out of proportion. Sheâs probably crying to her schoolteacher parents right now.â
At that exact moment, Danielâs phone began vibrating frantically on the linen tablecloth.
It was his Chief Financial Officer, corporate attorney, and primary bank manager calling simultaneously.
Daniel picked up the line, putting on his usual arrogant voice. âWhat is it, Marcus? Iâm having breakfast.â
âDaniel, where are you?!â his CFO gasped, his voice trembling with sheer panic over the speaker. âHartwell Capital just rejected our extension request! Theyâve issued a Formal Notice of Default on the twelve-million-dollar loan!â
Daniel froze, his fork hovering halfway to his mouth. âWhat?! Why would Hartwell deny an extension? Theyâve backed us for five years!â
âThey didn't just deny it, Daniel!â the CFO shouted. âThey invoked the emergency default clause! All our operating accounts have been frozen! The bank is sending receivers to seize the flagship hotel downtown at noon!â
Vivian dropped her glass, mimosa spilling across her silk dress. âWhat did he say, Daniel? Whatâs happening?!â
Before Daniel could answer, four uniformed police officers, accompanied by two detectives, walked straight into the country club dining room, their boots echoing loudly off the hardwood floor.
Leading them was Detective Vance, holding an official warrant stamped by the county judge.
âDaniel Cross? Vivian Cross?â Detective Vance called out, his voice cutting through the polite chatter of the country club.

Daniel stood up, his face pale. âWhat is the meaning of this? Do you know who we are? My family runs Cross Hotels!â
âWe know exactly who you are, Mr. Cross,â Detective Vance said, pulling out two pairs of heavy steel handcuffs. âYou and your mother are under arrest for felony aggravated battery, chemical assault, and witness tampering.â
