Chapter 5 - THE MIDNIGHT CONFESSION

That night, sleep eluded them both. While the wind rattled the pine branches outside their bedroom window, Lena lay awake in the dark, staring at the ceiling rafters. Matteo lay beside her, propped up on one elbow, watching the play of moonlight across her face. He knew the incident at the diner had ripped open old wounds—wounds from a time when Lena had been forced to live in the crossfire of the Marquez family's brutal territorial wars before Matteo faked his own death to escape the syndicate.
“You’re thinking about the syndicate,” Matteo said quietly, breaking the stillness.
“I’m thinking about how fast normalcy shatters,” Lena replied, turning on her side to face him. “Three years of baking pie, remembering coffee orders, feeling safe. And then three punks walk in, and for a second, I was back in Boston, waiting for the next bullet to fly.”

Matteo reached out, his thumb gently tracing the curve of her cheekbone. “They are gone, Lena. The old bosses are dead or locked away, and the men who survived know better than to cross me. What happened today... it’s a reminder that my enemies might still be looking. But I will never let anyone touch you again. I swore an oath on your life.”
“I know,” she whispered, leaning into his palm. “I trust you, Matteo. More than anyone. But we can't hide forever. Sooner or later, your past will catch up to us, and we need to be ready.” Matteo nodded slowly, knowing she was right. The peace they had carved out was fragile, built on a foundation of secrets and buried identities.
