Chapter 10 - THE LION’S TRAP

The trap Salvatore Rossi had set was poorly engineered, relying on arrogance rather than tactical superiority. Within ten minutes, Matteo had disarmed the remaining four enforcers, forcing them onto their knees in the center of the dusty warehouse floor. He stood over them, his pistol resting casually at his side, his breathing steady and controlled.

“Who sent you?” Matteo demanded, his voice echoing off the corrugated metal walls.

The lead enforcer, a scarred brute named Frankie, spat blood onto the floor and sneered. “Salvatore sends his regards, Marquez. He knows you’re hiding out here with your little waitress. Even if you kill us, a second team is already heading toward her diner right now.”

A cold spike of terror hit Matteo’s chest. It was a decoy trap. They had used the warehouse to lure him away while targeting Lena at the diner.

Without a second thought, Matteo pistol-whipped Frankie unconscious, turned on his heel, and sprinted back toward the sedan, his heart hammering against his ribs in a way it hadn't in years. He prayed to every god he knew that Lena had stayed locked safely inside the car.
