Chapter 9 - The Ghost of the Freight Harbor

The old municipal freight harbor sat abandoned at the edge of Lake Michigan, a decaying labyrinth of rusted shipping containers, towering crane gantries, and cavernous brick warehouses whipped by freezing winds off the water. The snow lay thick and undisturbed across the cracked asphalt, save for a single set of fresh tire tracks leading toward Warehouse 14—a facility officially listed as vacant city property but covertly utilized by corrupt municipal officials as an off-the-books holding site. Gideon’s black armored SUV rolled to a silent halt three hundred yards away behind a stack of rusted steel bulkheads, killing its headlights to blend into the deepening twilight. Inside the vehicle, Gideon checked the magazine of a matte-black firearm while three of his most trusted tactical enforcers—men who answered to him alone, untainted by the corrupt police precincts—checked their gear in hushed whispers. Rowan sat in the passenger seat, having refused to stay behind at the courthouse. She popped the knuckles of her left hand, her tactical instincts seamlessly snapping back into place. “The primary security detail will be concentrated near the loading dock doors,” Rowan whispered, analyzing the structural blueprint Gideon had pulled up on his tablet. “When I treated Delaney, her clothing fibers contained traces of marine diesel and high-density acoustic insulation. That means she was being held in the sub-basement office behind the main refrigeration units—secondary access only via the exterior storm drains.” Gideon looked at her with a mix of awe and deep protective concern. “You’re terrifying when you’re tactical, Rowan.” “Survival tends to sharpen the skill set,” she replied evenly. “Let’s move.” Operating with military precision, the small team slipped past the perimeter chain-link fence without triggering the automated surveillance cameras. The wind howled off the lake, masking the crunch of frozen gravel beneath their boots as they approached the rusted iron grate of the storm drain. Gideon pried the heavy cover loose with a crowbar in seconds, motioning for Rowan and the enforcers to drop quietly into the dark, echoing concrete tunnels below.
