Chapter 6 - The Clash at the Bench

Rowan’s steady footsteps down the center aisle immediately drew the scrutiny of the courtroom bailiffs. Her exhausted appearance—stained blue scrubs, unstyled hair, and the battered military jacket worn defiantly over her uniform—stood out like a sore thumb against the sea of expensive wool suits and judicial robes. It was at that exact moment that Judge Howard Price spotted her approaching the well of the court and snapped his reprimand, demanding that she strip off her filthy coat before daring to step near his bench. The gallery erupted in quiet, mocking laughter at the judge’s public humiliation of the tired nurse. But at the defense table, Gideon Falcone’s world came to a screeching halt. When Rowan slowly pulled the heavy jacket from her shoulders, the sleeve of her scrubs shifted upward, exposing the distinctive black tattoo of the broken-winged caduceus and five small stars along her inner forearm. Gideon’s breath caught in his throat, and the iron mask of detachment shattered instantly, replaced by absolute, staggering disbelief. He knew that mark intimately; he had stared at it under the blinding, frantic glare of a combat tent while a fearless young medic stitched his shrapnel-waged wounds together with blood-soaked hands. He had spent twelve long years mourning her, believing she had perished when their extraction helicopter went down in flames. Regaining her composure, Rowan ignored the judge’s sputtering outrage and spoke seven calm, resonant words that paralyzed the courtroom: “I can prove this man is innocent.” The prosecutor shot out of her chair, shouting objections about unverified civilian interjections and breach of courtroom protocol, while Judge Price banged his gavel furiously, demanding that the bailiffs remove the disruptive intruder immediately. But Gideon had already stood up from his chair, ignoring the warnings of his own defense attorney and the hands of the armed deputies reaching for his shoulders. His dark eyes remained locked onto Rowan’s face, searching for any sign that his mind was playing cruel tricks on him. “Rowan...?” he breathed out, his voice cracking with an intensity that silenced the entire room. Rowan met his gaze with unwavering steadiness, lifting her canvas bag containing the medical proof that would blow the prosecution’s case wide open.
