Chapter 7 - The Detention Room Confession

Ten minutes following the chaotic courtroom disruption, Judge Price had reluctantly agreed to a temporary thirty-minute recess in chambers, influenced largely by the sudden, aggressive intervention of Gideon’s legal team backed by the undeniable legal weight of the medical evidence Rowan presented. Rowan sat across a stainless-steel table inside a secure courthouse holding room, flanked by two county bailiffs and Gideon’s lead attorney, Marcus Vance. The heavy metal door swung open, and Gideon Falcone stepped inside, dismissing the guards and attorneys with a single, authoritative wave of his hand. Once the heavy door clicked shut, leaving the two of them alone in the quiet room, the formidable crime boss seemed to shrink under the overwhelming weight of twelve years of grief. He walked slowly toward the table, pulling out the metal chair opposite Rowan as though approaching a fragile apparition. “They told me you were gone, Rowan,” Gideon whispered, his hands trembling slightly as he rested them on the edge of the table—the exact same hands she had once bandaged in a war zone. “After the extraction chopper crashed in the Hindu Kush, search teams recovered the wreckage. They said nobody survived the fire.” Rowan offered a faint, tired smile, rotating her left wrist unconsciously to ease the chronic ache in her nerves. “The fire took a lot of things, Gideon, but it didn't take me. I spent six months in a military burn unit overseas before they finally discharged me stateside. By the time I tried to track down your unit, you had already rotated back and disappeared into the civilian sector.” Gideon shook his head in bitter self-reproach. “I built Mercer Holdings and expanded our logistics network across Chicago because I was looking for stability, looking for a way to honor the people who saved my life. I never stopped searching for you, Rowan.” “We can exchange war stories later,” Rowan interrupted gently, leaning forward and opening her canvas bag. “Right now, we have less than an hour before Judge Price tries to slam this case shut and send you away for a crime you didn't commit. Delaney Ashby is alive, and her sister Wren is still in mortal danger.” Gideon’s expression instantly hardened back into the ruthless protector of the streets. “Tell me everything.” Rowan slid the medical intake files and photographic evidence across the table, explaining how Delaney had been assaulted and framed by corrupt municipal enforcers working in collusion with the prosecutor’s office to cripple Falcone’s legitimate shipping empire. “The men who attacked Delaney weren't your guys, Gideon,” Rowan stated firmly. “They were rogue elements trying to pin a kidnapping on you to force your structural assets into forfeiture. And if we don't find seventeen-year-old Wren by tonight, they’re going to silence both sisters permanently.”
