Chapter 11 - Rescuing Wren

The interior of the holding cell was freezing, lit only by a dim overhead bulb dangling from a frayed cord. Huddled in the far corner, shivering violently beneath a thin wool blanket, sat seventeen-year-old Wren Ashby. Her face was pale, tear-streaked, and etched with raw terror, but as the door flew open and Rowan rushed into the room, the girl let out a sob of pure, overwhelming relief. “Wren! It’s okay, you’re safe now,” Rowan soothed immediately, dropping to her knees and wrapping the blanket tighter around the teenager’s trembling shoulders. “Are you hurt? Did anyone touch you?” “They... they said if Delaney talked to the police, they would kill us both,” Wren sobbed, burying her face against Rowan’s shoulder. “The judge’s men... they brought us here.” Gideon stepped into the room, his eyes scanning the space for any hidden threats before kneeling beside them. He pulled a secure satellite phone from his pocket, dialing a pre-programmed direct line to federal investigators stationed outside the jurisdiction of the corrupt Chicago police department. “This is Gideon Falcone,” he spoke into the receiver, his voice carrying absolute, undeniable authority. “I have secured seventeen-year-old Wren Ashby alive and unharmed at the old municipal freight harbor, Warehouse 14. Dispatch federal marshals and an independent investigative unit immediately to secure the premises and arrest the municipal officers currently attempting to flee the scene.” He clicked the phone off, looking down at Wren with deep gentleness. “Your nightmare is officially over, kid. Nobody is ever going to touch you or your sister again.” As federal sirens began wailing in the distance, echoing across the snowy harbor asphalt, Rowan helped Wren to her feet, supporting the exhausted teenager as they made their way back toward the extraction tunnels. The trap that corrupt officials had meticulously built to crush Gideon Falcone had completely collapsed upon their own heads.
